Each year district 86 recognizes members whose exceptional dedication and enthusiasm supported the district mission.
The nomination and selection process is very challenging with so many outstanding nomination submissions to consider.
Here are the finalists who have contributed to their club, area, division and district.

District Spirit Awards

The Spirit of District 86 is awarded to a member who consistently exemplifies Toastmasters values, and who has made a significant and notable contribution to District 86's success.
Any member in good standing may be eligible for this award, except for elected District leaders. There were two nominees:
Lisa Hennessy, DTM, nominated by her Sudbury Area Clubs and Dennis Bartel, DTM, who won the award.

Dennis set the bar high when he served the district as the Public Relations Manager 2017-2018.
Always willing to help Dennis mentored his replacement Matthew Ogbulafor, designed the district backdrop and the 10th anniversary logo among others.

Publicist Of The Year

This award recognizes publicity efforts by promoting Toastmasters throughout the year toward achieving the district mission.
It's awarded to a member who does the best job of promoting Toastmasters through a variety of media and throughout the District.

Dennis Bartel was the recipient of this award, as he arranged for the city of Brampton to proclaim Toastmasters month and personally led a PR campaign with publicized visits to each of the clubs in Brampton.
He continues to personally promote the consistency of using the Toastmasters branding across the district.

Club Coach Of The Year

The Club Coach of The Year Award goes to a successful Club Coach who led their club back to Distinguished Club status. Club Coaches that make these opening criteria are measured on the breadth and depth of their activities. The nominees for
CLUB COACH OF THE YEAR were, Deridor Collier, Ambitious City and Jeanie Lai Sheridan Park. It was awarded to DERIDOR COLLIER, ACS,ALB

Collier, supported the Ambitious City club to grow and retain their membership to qualify for distinguished status along with 9 education awards. She participated at club meetings and executive meetings and mentored club members to achieve their goals. And became a highly valued member of the club.

Club President of the Year

The President of the Year Award is based on Toastmasters club activities and personal achievements, including educational program, club administration, membership, and other club activities.
The nominees were: Millie Leng DHL, Sonia McGregor Creekside TD and Yoshith Perera Brampton
YOSHITH PERERA was named the CLUB PRESIDENT OF THE YEAR. Leading this club to achieve president’s distinguished -
Hereès what one of his club members had to say about him,
“As president this past year I watched as a young man grew into the role of a leader seamlessly. He invoked confidence in his team and a desire to push forward by his members. He lead by example and allowed us as members to grow with him.

Club of the Year

There are three levels to this award AND THREE DIFFERENT WINNERS.

Education Leadership won by PORT CREDIT TOASTMASTERS

The members of this club achieved 19 education awards in the legacy program AND 6 Pathways program for a total of 25 awards.

Membership Leadership, awarded to BRAMPTON TOASTMASTERS

This club has an overwhelming 20 members with over 3 years tenure, the club sponsored 2 youth leadership programs and 2 Speechcraft programs, has 2 new club mentors and members serving on the district executive and conference committee.

ENERGETICS Toastmasters won the Club of the year award.

This club achieved president’s distinguished by April 30, 2018 and achieved 42 educational awards # 14 in the world with 28 legacy and 14 Pathways awards including 3 DTM’s.

This club also focused on Strong membership building and retention efforts with 3 members serving on district executive, officer training, and district committees

Area Director of the year

The Area Director of the Year is based on the Area performance and the individuals' contributions to that achievement. last year there were 63 area directors.
The nominees were: Lou Mulligan Area D87, Cindy Tate Area 34, Muktha Tumkur Area D82

Lou Mulligan was the receipient of this award. He went above and beyond to support the members in the Area and became the club coach for one of the struggling clubs.

Of the 3 clubs to achieve presidents distinguished 2 of the clubs did so for the first time in recent years with this directors training and coaching.


Division Director of the year

This award recognizes the division director whose dedication, commitment and area team significantly contributed to achieving the district mission.
The nominees were: Maheeza Mohamed Division B and Kyla Werrett DTM Division D

The award went to Kyla Werret who achieved Presidents distinguished status, FIRST IN THE DISTRICT with 67% of the clubs achieving distinguished or better. Though two clubs were suspended early in the YEAR by April 3 new clubs were started. Providing opportunity for many members to serve as club sponsor and mentor.
She also took on the demanding role of the district’s alignment committee chair.

Toastmaster of the year – the top award of the district

This award recognizes one Toastmaster whose dedication, commitment significantly contributed toward achieving the district mission. Criteria include membership, education, leadership, public relations and Commitment and support of district, division and area events.

The nominees were: Dennis Bartel, DTM Hershaw, Raising Champions, Mark Hayes, DTM Port Credit and Sheridan Park and Thomas Mathai, Mississauga Sales and Marketing

MARK HAYES, DTM was pronouncedTOASTMASTER OF THE YEAR

A member of 2 clubs, his usual week will find him at club meetings or events 3 to 4 times a week.

Serving as leadership to HELP rebuild a struggling club to achieve presidents distinguished, participating at several prospective club demo meetings, mentoring a new club AND serving at contests. This toastmaster is always willing to help OUT.

A TRUE Supporter of the Toastmasters education program, Delivering dozens of manual speeches completing 12 personal education awards this year to earn his second DTM and is very close to his third.
